Elvis Fans All Shook Up For Key Anniversary
by Mickey on Jan.08, 2010, under Birthdays, Celebrities, Congradulations, Did You Know?, Entertainment, Interesting, Music
Rockers in the US are looking forward to a day of celebrations with the annual Rock and Roll Day falling on what would have been Elvis Presley’s 75th birthday.
The king of rock’n'roll was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Vernon and Gladys Presley in 1935; he had a twin brother, Jessie Gaaron, who was stillborn.
Elvis went on to become the best-selling solo artist of all time, with worldwide sales of around one billion records.
His premature death in 1977 at the age of just 42 left fans distraught, with so many thousands flocking to pay their respects outside his Gracelands home in Memphis that President Carter took the decision to call in the National Guard.
Graceland is to play host to today’s anniversary party, with Elvis’ daughter Lisa Marie and her mother, Priscilla – Elvis’ former wife – attending a birthday cake-cutting ceremony at which Memphis officials are due to announce Elvis Presley Day.
More than 300 fans from the UK are in Memphis for the celebrations but, says Todd Slaughter of the Elvis Presley Fan Club of Great Britain, they are facing one or two problems.
“They’ve got the same weather out there as we have here,” he told Sky News Online.
“So we’re not sure what’s going on.
“The plan was to go to Gracelands and from there to Tupelo but that’s been cancelled because of the bad weather.
“What’ll they do if all else fails? Have a drink I expect – they’re British after all!”
Todd, who runs the fan club, has been taking fans to see Elvis since 1972.
“I thought all that would finish when he died but it’s still going strong. We take anything up to 1,000 people out. They’re ordinary fans – mums, dads, children and they’re just straightforward people who love Elvis.”
Todd himself met Elvis on three times, the first when he was with fellow Elvis fan, Radio Luxembourg DJ Tony Prince.
“Nothing prepared me for meeting him.
“The amazing thing was you didn’t realise he was there. You’d be in the room and he wasn’t there and then suddenly he was, but there was no fanfare, no build up…he was just there, he just appeared.
“He wasn’t a public speaker – some stars get their kicks from all the attention wherever they are, but he wasn’t like that. He was very shy.
“I would think the stage was where he got his release, when he was performing.”

Want To Know More About Your Birthdate?
by Mickey on Aug.21, 2009, under Birthdays, Cool Stuff, Did You Know?, Interesting
Check out Paul Sadowski’s Birthday Calculator to find out more about your special day!
Here’s a bit of info I got:
Your age is the equivalent of a dog that is 5.23405088062622 years old. (You’re still chasing cats!)
Ouch, my dog is older than me!
You were born on a Tuesday. Your Life path number is 3.
I did some checking on what life path 3 means and according to numerology I entered this plane with a strong sense of creativity and with wonderful communications skills (no wonder I’m always in the shit). Life is generally lived to the fullest, often much worry about tomorrow (quite correct).
Your fortune cookie reads: Good luck is the result of good planning.
Yeah, right!
You are 1,155,445,671 seconds old.
That’s how much?
Your lucky day is Saturday. Today is not one of your lucky days!
I like that one, nothing better than a Saturday!
Your birth flower is Carnation, and your birthstone is Garnet
I don’t like either of them, the one stinks and the other one red (I hate red)!
Let us know what you find out about your Birthdate!

Mandela Day ‘Meaningless’
by Mickey on Jul.24, 2009, under Birthdays, Celebrities, People
Correctly, we were all urged to celebrate former President Nelson Mandela’s 91st birthday last Saturday by devoting sixty-seven minutes of our time to help others. If Mandela were to use us as a mirror, w
ould he see himself in us?
Days before Saturday, radio stations frantically recorded voices of “important people” in our society telling us how they would spend their sixty-seven minutes in response to Mandela’s call. It was as though they all went to the same advisor; the story was so similar: visiting old age homes, painting buildings, cleaning this or cleaning that!
Indeed, Mandela Day gave these “important people” a rare opportunity to take pictures and to be captured by TV cameras looking good. At a stroke, they appeared like philanthropic beings who care for those in need. Yet if Mandela were to use them as a mirror, he would hardly see himself in most of these “important people”
A few weeks ago, we read in newspapers about billions of taxpayers’ money that went into the pockets of public servants who stealthily own companies that benefited from government tenders. But the “important people” who looked nice on Mandela Day issued no single statement of condemnation.
In most communities, municipal services have almost collapsed, but the mayors and councillors were also part of the “important people” who devoted sixty-seven minutes of their time last Saturday. Cases of bread-producers fixing prices against the poor are indeed among those we are too familiar with, yet such amoral entrepreneurs did not hesitate to wish Mandela well.
We again find ourselves confronted with the very troubling question: If Mandela were to use us as a mirror, would he see himself in us? Indeed, we need not have spent twenty-seven years in jail to answer this soul-searching question. We only need to be South African, and occupy offices in the public or private sphere. Anyone who pursues selfish interests without regard for the good of society has wasted his or her sixty-seven minutes by posing before TV cameras two days ago. (continue reading…)
Madiba’s Virtual Bash
by Mickey on Jul.20, 2009, under Birthdays, Celebrities
Our star-studded party for Madiba
Just because you’re 91, you don’t have to stop partying like a rock star! So in honour of Madiba’s big day, we’re having a party for him and a few other celebrities who also celebrate their birthday on 18 July.
Due to the recession, however, this is a party for the people, by the people. Here’s how it’s going to go down:
Steve Forbes (1947) will take care of the budget. As the CEO of Forbes Inc and a former politician, Steve knows about money and convincing people to give theirs to him. He’s also editor-in-chief of Forbes Magazine, so he’ll do the invites, too.
Sir Richard Branson (1950) will be the DJ. This uber-entrepeneur started his first record store when he was only 22! He’s gone on to be one of the richest men in the world with his Virgin brand selling everything from cellphones to gym memberships. Hopefully he’ll go old-school at the party and play some of those LPs he used to sell out of his boot.
What’s a party without some pretty girls? Richard would never stand for that! Bollywood starlet Priyanka Chopra (1980) and actress Kristen Bell (1980) will up the entertainment and aesthetic value of the party. It’s all in the details…
With all these A-Listers, a bouncer is of the utmost importance. Vin Diesel (1967) and his muscles will make sure no one gatecrashes his party. And don’t mess with him – he’s fast ‘n furious.
And how will our guests arrive? In style, of course. Leave it to actor and real-life pilot James Brolin (1940) to take care of the transport. Don’t worry; he had a lot of practice while filming Pensacola: Wings of Gold.
Like any real party, not everyone can make it. Crazy blues singer Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (1929 – 2000) would have celebrated his 80th birthday with Madiba. But we wouldn’t want him to put a spell on Mandela, so perhaps this is for the best. The infamous Hunter S. Thompson (1937 – 2005), who penned Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, would have been 72 this year. As a fellow author, I’m sure Madiba would have enjoyed some of his ramblings.
