Elvis Fans All Shook Up For Key Anniversary

by Mickey on Jan.08, 2010, under Birthdays, Celebrities, Congradulations, Did You Know?, Entertainment, Interesting, Music

Rockers in the US are looking forward to a day of celebrations with the annual Rock and Roll Day falling on what would have been Elvis Presley’s 75th birthday.

Elvis, pictured in the 1960s. His fans are as steadfast as ever

The king of rock’n'roll was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Vernon and Gladys Presley in 1935; he had a twin brother, Jessie Gaaron, who was stillborn.

Elvis went on to become the best-selling solo artist of all time, with worldwide sales of around one billion records.

His premature death in 1977 at the age of just 42 left fans distraught, with so many thousands flocking to pay their respects outside his Gracelands home in Memphis that President Carter took the decision to call in the National Guard.

Graceland is to play host to today’s anniversary party, with Elvis’ daughter Lisa Marie and her mother, Priscilla – Elvis’ former wife – attending a birthday cake-cutting ceremony at which Memphis officials are due to announce Elvis Presley Day.

More than 300 fans from the UK are in Memphis for the celebrations but, says Todd Slaughter of the Elvis Presley Fan Club of Great Britain, they are facing one or two problems.

“They’ve got the same weather out there as we have here,” he told Sky News Online.

“So we’re not sure what’s going on.

“The plan was to go to Gracelands and from there to Tupelo but that’s been cancelled because of the bad weather.

“What’ll they do if all else fails? Have a drink I expect – they’re British after all!”

Todd, who runs the fan club, has been taking fans to see Elvis since 1972.

“I thought all that would finish when he died but it’s still going strong. We take anything up to 1,000 people out. They’re ordinary fans – mums, dads, children and they’re just straightforward people who love Elvis.”

Todd himself met Elvis on three times, the first when he was with fellow Elvis fan, Radio Luxembourg DJ Tony Prince.

“Nothing prepared me for meeting him.

“The amazing thing was you didn’t realise he was there. You’d be in the room and he wasn’t there and then suddenly he was, but there was no fanfare, no build up…he was just there, he just appeared.

“He wasn’t a public speaker – some stars get their kicks from all the attention wherever they are, but he wasn’t like that. He was very shy.

“I would think the stage was where he got his release, when he was performing.”

Jurie Els Acquitted

by Mickey on Dec.04, 2009, under Congradulations, Did You Know?, Interesting

Jurie Els

Pretoria – Afrikaans singer Jurie Els was today acquitted on all charges of sexually molesting his former protégé Robbie Klay as a child.

A jubilant Els told reporters he had always known that he would be acquitted if he just told the truth.

Els said he had already forgiven Klay but believed the young singer “needed help”.

Acting judge Chris Eksteen acquitted Els in the High Court in Pretoria on two charges of indecently assaulting and a charge of soliciting Klay to commit indecent acts while he was a minor.

The judge said although there was “a suspicion” against Els, a suspicion was not enough to convict him.

He said although Els had not impressed the court and portrayed Klay as virtually an imbecile while blowing his own horn, there was no reason to reject his evidence that nothing had happened between him and Klay.

Cape Town Cops Kill 4 Would-Be Robbers

by Mickey on Oct.27, 2009, under Congradulations, Interesting, Unbelieveable, Useless/Useful Information

Police shot dead four would-be cash-in-transit robbers in Cape Town on Monday, Western Cape police said.

cash-in-transit-heistA gang of five attacked a Coin Security van in Bamford Street, Kuilsrivier around lunch time and police patrolling the area responded, spokesperson Musa Zondi said.

“In the ensuing gunfight, two robbers died. Three robbers fled and police were hot on their trail. The robbers turned and fired at the police who then returned fire.”

Two of the three remaining robbers were shot and killed in Lourens Street and the third was arrested, unhurt.

They used two stolen cars to ram the van.

“The first car, a Mercedes-Benz rammed the cash van from the front. A second car, a white Toyota Camry pulled up and occupants jumped out and started firing at the cash van.”

Unfortunately for the robbers we were just around the corner,” Zondi told Sapa.

Members from the police’s Task Force and policing units were involved in the shootout. No police officers or any member of the public were injured.

Zondi said police were on alert for cash-in-transit heists, as every year around Christmas, there was an increase in this type of crime.

“There are a number of priority crimes that we work on, and we know which routes are targeted. This is the result of good police work, with good intelligence, which produced good results.”

Police were still looking for more firearms the robbers might have thrown away while fleeing.

“This is a residential area. We don’t want the weapons ending up in the wrong hands.”

So far police had recovered two handguns, an AK-47 and R4 rifle.

National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele congratulated the police for their work.

“This is war and police are rising to the challenge to protect life and limb of ordinary South Africans.
Police responded and did what they had to do.

“This is another way of showing that we are serious about fighting crime and making this country safe for all its citizens,” Cele said in a statement.

The arrested man was expected to appear in the Kuilsrivier Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted robbery, attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Blind Man Hits 322.5km/h

by Mickey on Oct.07, 2009, under Congradulations, Did You Know?, Sport, Transport, Wow

Upington – A South African man set a new world land speed record for the blind in Upington on Tuesday, when he reached a speed of 322.5km/h in a Mercedes-Benz SL 65 Black series.

Hein Wagner, who was born blind, is a motivational speaker from Durbanville.

In 2005 Wagner became the first South African to set a world land speed record. He reached 269km/h in a Maserati.

According to him, reaching a speed of 200 miles per hour (321.9km/h) is a milestone for any driver, regardless of whether they’re sighted or blind.

Hein Wagner and his navigator, Ray Wakefield, after he set a new land speed record for the blind in Upington.

His feat will be entered in the Guinness World Records, as he broke the previous record of 308km/h, set by a blind Belgian. Wagner maintained the 322.5km/h speed for a distance of 1 000m.

The runway at the Upington International Airport proved to be long enough for accelerating, setting the record, and safely coming to a standstill.

Wagner wants to use this record to raise funds for his Vision Trust organisation, which is aimed at making technology more accessible to the blind.

Finding an appropriate car proved to be a challenge, but the solution appeared in the form of a powerful Mercedes-Benz which belongs to Johannesburg businessman Lolly Jackson.

Global Consulting Solutions sponsored the insurance of R50 000 for the two days. His navigator was Ray Wakefield from Speedrecord SA.

Wagner thanked the airport staff and the ambulance service for their support.

According to him, “you’re stupid if you aren’t scared” when tackling such a record. He is already preparing for his next challenge: flying a Boeing – passengers and all – from London to Johannesburg.

Wagner has many adventures under his belt. In 2006 he completed the New York City Marathon in 4 hours and 27 minutes. He also performed his first skydive in 2005, from a height of 10 000ft (3km).

He completed a cycling race, the Construction du Cap, as a solo cyclist. He also participated in the Cape-to-Rio yacht race and climbed the ten highest mountains in the Western Cape.

Police Foiled Armed Robbery In Kuilsriver

by Mickey on Sep.09, 2009, under Beware, Congradulations, Death, Did You Know?, Inspirational, Interesting, People, Useless/Useful Information

Police have foiled their fourth armed robbery in greater Cape Town in just one week – after an elite police unit yesterday snared an eight-man gang in Kuilsriver, killing one.

This follows police action in which suspected robbers were foiled in Long Street, Milnerton and Khayelitsha last week. Yesterday’s incident had one Kuilsriver resident praying for his life. “It was like a war zone. I was too scared to even look outside.”

Metro Police chief Robert Young said there was a definite shift in the public’s mindset and attitude towards law enforcement officials.

Community Safety MEC Lennit Max, said he was “very excited” at the increase in “pro-active information”, which meant police could act swiftly to stop criminals.

“This Is An African Child’

by Mickey on Aug.21, 2009, under Congradulations, Sport, Unbelieveable

15365485Berlin – Women’s 800-meter world champion Caster Semenya is facing intense scrutiny about her gender because she is African, the president of the South African athletics federation said on Thursday.

The 18-year-old Semenya won her first world title after revelations surfaced that she was undergoing a gender test to prove she was a woman.

“It would not be like that if it were some young girl from Europe,” Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “If it was a white child, she would be sitting somewhere with a psychologist, but this is an African child.”

Chuene also said there was no evidence to prove Semenya was doing anything wrong.

“If there was evidence, she would have been stopped,” Chuene said. “Where I come from, you’re innocent until proven guilty.

“They’re judging her based on what?” Chuene added. “Who can give me conclusive evidence? I want someone to do that.”

Chuene said he has been with Semenya since she dominated the 800 on Wednesday evening, winning in world leading time of 1 minute, 55.45 seconds.

“I’ve been with her all the time,” Chuene said. “I have to be the father. I have to be everything.

“People think we come from the bush in Africa and live like animals. We’re not going to allow people to destroy children.”

Semenya skipped the post-race news conference, and has not spoken publicly since the uproar began on Wednesday afternoon. But Chuene said Semenya was insulted by the scrutiny.

“She cannot be different from any child. She’s a human being. She reacted like a child,” Chuene said. “Everybody would react that way. You cannot go through that humiliation.”

On Wednesday afternoon, two days after Semenya qualified for the 800 final, revelations surfaced that she was undergoing a gender verification test because of concerns she does not meet the requirements to compete as a woman.

The teenager’s stunning improvement in times, along with her muscular build and deep voice, sparked speculation about her gender.

“This is based on how you look,” Chuene said. “Everything has been blown out of proportion.”
