Aussie Couple Pulled Over 3x

by Mickey on Nov.16, 2009, under Did You Know?, Drinks, Unbelieveable

drunk-drivingSydney -  An Australian couple were caught drunk driving three times in just three hours on Sunday – each time a little further along the same street, police said.

Victorian police said they first encountered a 37-year-old man driving along Montague Street in Melbourne shortly after midnight. He was breath-tested and found to be over the legal alcohol limit for driving.

“Police observed the female passenger in the car was also alcohol affected and warned her not to drive,” police said in a statement.

Just over an hour later the pair were pulled over again in Montague Street and this time the 27-year-old woman was driving. She was breath-tested and also found to have too much alcohol in her system to drive.

“The pair were nabbed a third time on Montague Street about 03:05 when the man was breath tested and refused to accompany police back to the station,” police said.

The pair had not been arrested but would face drunk-driving charges, police added.

Do You Know What You’re Drinking?

by Mickey on Oct.16, 2009, under Did You Know?, Drinks, Interesting

The Medical Research Council says a lack of adequate data on the abuse of homemade alcohol may impede efforts aiming to curb the practice.

boat_drinksVery few studies in this area have been conducted in recent years.

The MRC warns the problem is underestimated.

One homemade alcohol recipe Eyewitness News found looked relatively innocuous. The ingredients include cake flour and sugar. Twenty litres of the substance sells cane be made for as little as R16.

The MRC’s Charles Parry says beverages such as this are often abused by binge drinkers in townships.

“People don’t know how much alcohol is in it. The longer it is left to ferment the more the alcohol level rises,” says Parry.

He emphasises more studies are needed to determine the prevalence and severity of the practice.

Farmer labourers’ union Sekule Sonke has accused government of ignoring the issue.

You Drinking To Much Soft Drinks?

by Mickey on May.20, 2009, under Beware, Did You Know?, Drinks, Interesting, People

Paris – A steady, litres-per-day diet of colas can cause serious muscle problems, doctors warned in a study on Tuesday.

A review of clinical cases showed that super-sized doses of soft drinks loaded with processed sugars and caffeine can cause potassium levels in the blood to plummet, giving rise to a condition known as hypocalaemia.

Small changes in potassium levels can profoundly effect the functioning of the body’s cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems.

Typical symptoms of hypocalaemia are decreased muscle strength, cramping, palpitations and nausea.

In more extreme cases, potassium deficiency can lead to heart trouble and profound paralysis.

“We are consuming more soft drinks than ever before and a number of health issues have already been identified,” including tooth decay, loss of bone mass, and diabetes, said Moses Elisaf, a doctor at the University of Ioannina in Greece and main architect of the study.

“Excessive cola consumption can also lead to hypocalaemia, causing an adverse effect on vital muscle functions,” he said in a statement.

Believe It Or Not! “Men Who Drink Wine, Live Longer”

by Mickey on Apr.30, 2009, under Did You Know?, Drinks

London – Drinking up to half a glass of wine per day can help you live up to five years longer – at least for men, according to a study published on Thursday.

wine
The impact also depends on the exact amount drunk – more than half a glass starts bringing life expectancy down again, according to researchers from Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

“Drinking wine was strongly associated with a lower risk of dying from coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and death from all causes,” said the study.

Effects varied, however: men who drink up to 20 grammes of any type of alcohol per day live for about two years longer than non-drinkers, while the length of time is slightly lesser for those drinking more than 20 grammes.

Those drinking only wine, and less than half a glass a day, lived some 2.5 years longer than those who drank beer and spirits, and almost five years longer than non-drinkers, said the study.

Capetonians, Drink While You Still Can!

by Mickey on Feb.10, 2009, under Drinks

Homeowners planning to throw big parties in the Western Cape might end up having to apply for a liquor licence — thanks to stringent booze regulations that have been proposed.

But the misery for residents of the Mother City doesn’t end there.

If the Cape Town city council has its way, owners of bars, restaurants and hotels in residential areas will have to call last rounds at 9pm.

The licence plan is part of the Western Cape’s drive to stamp out illegal shebeens, and Cape Town’s city fathers hope the curfew will reduce noise and general disturbance for neighbours at night and the early hours of the morning.
